Know More About Triplett Hygro-Thermometer

What is Hygro-Thermometer?

A hygro-thermometer measures relative humidity (RH) and temperature. The unit of measure for relative humidity is percent (the range is 0.0 to 100.0%). 100% relative humidity is the maximum amount of moisture that air can hold without condensation. Temperature is sensed on Triplett Hygro-Thermometers by a thermistor and is displayed in °C or °F. Hygro-thermometers are devices used to measure both the moisture content and the temperature of a given environment. It is a combination of hygrometer and thermometer. The hygrometer is used to measure the moisture content of the air while the thermometer is used to measure the temperature of the air. The humidity is generally expressed in percentage, while the temperature is measured in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit. Typically, they are used in industrial and commercial settings where humidity and temperature need to be closely monitored.  There are different types of hygro-thermometers in the market. Some are basic, pen-style meters that measure moisture and temperature on a single surface. Others are more complex, with multiple sensors that can provide data from all angles in a given space. No matter the type you choose, make sure to get one that is calibrated for your specific application.

What is Dew Point?

Dew Point is the temperature at which water vapor condenses. It is not as common as relative humidity measurements but has applications in meteorological, chemical, and electronic assembly areas.

What is a Psychrometer?

A Psychrometer is a Hygro-Thermometer that uses Wet/Dry Bulb technology. Wet/Dry Bulb is a complex humidity-temperature measuring technology that Triplett meters simulate using an internal algorithm.

How does a Hygro-Thermometer Work?

Our digital hygro-thermometers are used to measure the relative humidity and temperature of the given environment. Here is how they work during these measurements.

  • Humidity Measurement: Digital hygro-thermometers are equipped with a capacitive or resistive sensor. These sensors differ in electrical properties; however, they work based on the same principle of humidity measurement. In both types, electricity is made to pass through a moisture-absorbent material exposed to air. The electrical properties of these devices change with the humidity of the air. When the humidity level in the air is high, the material will absorb more water vapor and vice versa. The device measures the change of electrical properties in the sensor. It converts it into a relative humidity (RH) value, which is shown as a percentage on the digital screen. These readings are sent to the remotely connected tablet, phone, or web browser.
  • Temperature Measurement: A digital hygro-thermometer uses a temperature sensor, which is usually a thermocouple or a thermistor, for temperature measurement. A thermistor is a type of sensor that shows a change in resistance concerning the temperature. However, a thermocouple produces a voltage when the temperature changes. The electrical properties of these sensors would differ according to the increase or decrease in temperatures of the surrounding environment. The voltage or resistance reading is converted into a temperature value using mathematical formulas or calibration curves. These converted temperature values are displayed in Fahrenheit (°F) or Celsius (°C) on the digital screen.

How do you Read a Hygro-Thermometer?

There are a variety of hygro-thermometers in the market that measure various combinations of humidity and temperature. Each type of hygro-thermometer has its own set of unique benefits and drawbacks. Some hygro-thermometers are specifically designed for certain climates or applications, while others are more versatile.

No matter which type of hygro-thermometer is chosen, it is important to understand the measuring value in order to use it effectively. The measuring value is the unit of measurement that is used to record the humidity and temperature data. The value is usually displayed as a percentage or a number with a degree symbol. The first thing to understand is that the two scales on the device measure different things. To read a hygro-thermometer, you must first understand what the different scales on the instrument represent. The scale on the left measure moisture content, while the scale on the right measures air temperature. They have a screen that displays the current temperature, humidity level and the date and time.

What are the Hygro-Thermometer Applications?

  • Semiconductor fabrication clean rooms
  • Environmental analysis
  • Electronic assembly
  • Food processing and serving areas
  • Computer and other workstation environments
  • Processes requiring gases in manufacturing
  • HVAC applications
  • Greenhouses
  • Flood restoration
  • Soil Moisture Content Measurement
  • Temperature and Humidity Levels in Storage Facilities
  • Humidity Levels in Home
  • Factories and Machine Areas

What are the factors affecting the performance of digital hygro-thermometers?

There are several factors affecting the performance of digital hygro-thermometers. The following are a few common ones among them.

  • Calibration: Improper calibration is one of the leading causes of reading errors in digital hygro-thermometers. These devices must be calibrated to the manufacturer’s specifications following the user manual. This calibration helps improve the performance of measurement circuits and sensors.
  • Operating Conditions: Digital hygro-thermometers can be used indoors or outdoors for temperature and humidity measurements. Factors such as exposure to moisture, sunlight, contaminants, or temperature extremes can impact the readings. Thus, accurate placement in the operating environment is necessary to ensure proper readings.
  • Sensor Quality and Aging: There are several cheaper variants of hygro-thermometers in the market, which may make tall claims of accuracy. Although they may cost less, these devices are equipped with cheap-quality sensors that may produce inaccurate results. This is why investing in high-quality hygro-thermometers for your needs is always better. This is because these devices offer consistent, yet stable results in most challenging working environments. Similarly, the humidity or temperature measurement capabilities of these sensors diminish over time. In this case, the sensors would require frequent calibrations to ensure their accuracy. Sometimes, these aged sensors may also require replacements.
  • Drift: Generally, humidity sensors in hygro-thermometers experience drift with time. This means, their electrical properties may change even if there is no change in the humidity. This drift can be easily corrected using periodic calibration.
  • Sampling Rate: The sampling rate is the frequency at which these devices can sample or update their readings. Quicker sampling rates would mean better readings; however, they may drain the battery quickly.
  • Interferences: The readings of a humidity or temperature sensor in these hygro-thermometers may get affected by radiofrequency or electromagnetic interference of nearby devices, thereby leading to inaccurate readings.
  • Handling and Storage: Improper handling of these devices can also affect the readings. Any instances of dropping the devices or exposing them to physical stress can affect reading accuracy. Hence, they must be handled with care.

How to choose the right digital hygro-thermometer for your application?

Digital hygro-thermometers are used for the measurement of temperature or humidity across various settings. Thus, they must be chosen carefully. The following are a few factors to be considered when buying them for your application.

  • Address Your Application Requirements: As said before, these devices may be used in a laboratory, home, commercial, or industrial setting. So, depending on the usage, you can weigh the features against your requirements.
  • Focus on Level of Accuracy: Research facilities, laboratories, and manufacturing facilities require digital hygro-thermometers of high accuracy. However, commercial facilities may not require a high level of accuracy. Many of our hygro-thermometers are designed to meet high accuracy requirements.
  • Check Calibration Requirements: Again, this would depend on the level of accuracy needed. Some models of our hygro-thermometers may require regular calibration over others. Ensure to follow the steps of calibration described in the user manual to ensure proper calibration.
  • Check the Readability of Display: This would depend on the lighting conditions of the environment where you want to use them. For instance, if you wish to use these devices in low light conditions, look for models with clear, large, and backlit displays.
  • Consider Durability and Reliability: If you wish to use these devices in harsh environments, consider those with dustproof or waterproof designs.
  • Focus on Data Logging Capabilities: If you plan to record the data over time, consider the model with data logging capabilities. See if the device supports connectivity to mobile phones or other smart devices.
  • Consult Experts: If you are unsure about the right type of digital hygro-thermometer for your applications, ensure to contact our experts. They will understand your requirements and guide you on the right selection.
