What is Hygro-Thermometer?

A hygro-thermometer measures relative humidity (RH) and temperature. The unit of measure for relative humidity is percent (the range is 0.0 to 100.0%). 100% relative humidity is the maximum amount of moisture that air can hold without condensation. Temperature is sensed on Triplett Hygro-Thermometers by a thermistor and is displayed in °C or °F. Hygro-thermometers are devices used to measure both the moisture content and the temperature of a given environment. It is a combination of hygrometer and thermometer. The hygrometer is used to measure the moisture content of the air while the thermometer is used to measure the temperature of the air. The humidity is generally expressed in percentage, while the temperature is measured in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit. Typically, they are used in industrial and commercial settings where humidity and temperature need to be closely monitored.  There are different types of hygro-thermometers in the market. Some are basic, pen-style meters that measure moisture and temperature on a single surface. Others are more complex, with multiple sensors that can provide data from all angles in a given space. What is Dew Point?

A Psychrometer is a Hygro-Thermometer that uses Wet/Dry Bulb technology. Wet/Dry Bulb is a complex humidity-temperature measuring technology that Triplett meters simulate using an internal algorithm.

How does a Hygro-Thermometer Work?

Our digital hygro-thermometers are used to measure the relative humidity and temperature of the given environment. Here is how they work during these measurements.

  • Humidity Measurement: Digital hygro-thermometers are equipped with a capacitive or resistive sensor. These sensors differ in electrical properties; however, they work based on the same principle of humidity measurement. In both types, electricity is made to pass through a moisture-absorbent material exposed to air. The electrical properties of these devices change with the humidity of the air. When the humidity level in the air is high, the material will absorb more water vapor and vice versa. The device measures the change of electrical properties in the sensor. It converts it into a relative humidity (RH) value, which is shown as a percentage on the digital screen. These readings are sent to the remotely connected tablet, phone, or web browser.
  • Temperature Measurement: A digital hygro-thermometer uses a temperature sensor, which is usually a thermocouple or a thermistor, for temperature measurement. A thermistor is a type of sensor that shows a change in resistance concerning the temperature. However, a thermocouple produces a voltage when the temperature changes. The electrical properties of these sensors would differ according to the increase or decrease in temperatures of the surrounding environment. The voltage or resistance reading is converted into a temperature value using mathematical formulas or calibration curves. Tips to Troubleshoot Your Digital Hygro-Thermometer

    • Ensure the time of pressing ON/OFF is more than 300 mS.
    • Replace or remove the battery and try again.
    • Ensure the battery is placed properly with the right polarity and good contact.
  • The display disappears more often: If this happens, then:
    • Check if the low battery indicator shows when the display disappears.
    • Press ON/OFF+ HOLD to turn on the meter.
  • The calibration procedure has failed: If this happens, then:
    • Check if the low battery indicator shows before the calibration. If this shows, then replace it with a new battery.
    • Ensure there is good sealing when the meter probe is inserted into the salt bottle.
    • Ensure the free air temperature is within 23+2 °C on calibration.
